DISCOVER THE HIDDEN TREASURES IN OUR RURAL CHURCHYARDS
There are over 20,000 acres of churchyards scattered around Britain.
They are historical databanks that can stretch back over hundreds of years, allowing us to travel back in time. Many urban churchyards provide towns with green lungs where wildlife can still flourish within our cities, while rural churchyards have not been subject to the changes in farming practices that pressures of food security and safety have inflicted on the countryside.
Churches that have joined the Sacred Space Project want to make their churchyards more accessible to all, from those seeking information for their family history, those with an interest in wildlife or someone looking for a few moments of quiet contemplation. |
