The Sacred Space project has recently been busy preparing lots of different publications to help everyone make the most of the churchyards.

through the gate A new activity pack has been launched to encourage primary age children to explore the nature and history that can be found in Wrexham’s rural churchyards. The packs are crammed with fascinating information and activities, and are aimed at both schools and families.

A detailed tour booklet of St Chad’s churchyard in Hanmer has also been put together as part of the project by enthusiastic volunteer Bill Barlow.

Volunteers have also been busy recording gravestone inscriptions over the last two years for Holy Trinity, Bronington, St Mary’s, Chirk and St Paul’s at Isycoed. All their hard work is now available for family historians in booklets, which can be obtained from these churches, as well as the graveyard search on the website.

An interpretation panel and leaflet has also been prepared for St Mary’s churchyard, Minera, which joined the project recently. The churchyard has plenty of things of interest and even has a bird hide, as well as bird boxes. There are now 13 individual churchyards that have interpretation leaflets.

Heather Williams of Northern Marches Cymru, which is co-ordinating the Sacred Space initiative, said: “The interest and support for this project has been fantastic.

“As a result, we’ve published a booklet called Sacred Space - A Rural Wrexham Churchyard Project and its Discoveries.

“It records the achievements of the project, and includes details of the discoveries carried out in workshops covering subjects like yew trees, lichens and the geology of gravestones. “

All the information can be found on this website, most of which can be downloaded. Publications can also be found in the Wrexham Tourist Information Centre or the churches themselves.

The funding ends in February 2011 but it is anticipated that volunteers will continue to work on the project.
